Keywords: COVID-19, candidemia, incidence

Objective: Increased incidence rate of candidemia among intensive care unit (ICU) patients with novel coronavirus disease-2019 infection (COVID-19) has been observed. The most common opportunistic fungal infection in this group was determined to be candidemia. The aim of this study is to retrospectively compare the candidemia rate in patients infected with COVID 19 in intensive care with uninfected patients retrospectively.

Methods: Current retrospective study was conducted according to medical records of Infection Control Committee of 1681 patients who were COVID-19 positive and 16718 patients who were COVID-19 negative between April 2020 - May 2023 . Crude overall incidence rate among the cohort, per 100 person was calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 26.0 (IBM, USA).

Results: In the group containing 1690 COVID-19 positive patients, the candidemia incidence rate was calculated as 2.77% for 2020, 1.11% for 2021, 1.69% for 2022, and 5.17% for the first six months of 2023. The candidemia incidence rate was found to be 2.01% in total COVID-19 ICU patients for 2020-2023. In the group containing 16718 patients without COVID-19, the candidemia incidence rate was calculated as 0.88% in 2020, 1.00% in 2021, 0.88% in 2022 and 1.14% in 2023. The candidemia incidence rate in COVID-19 negative ICU patients was calculated as 0.94% in total for 2020-2023.

Conclusion: A statistically significant difference was found between COVID-19 positive and negative ICU patients in terms of candidemia development (p=0.00005).
