Keywords: Human papillomavirus, awareness of HPV infection, awareness of HPV vaccine |
Objective: Despite causing serious healthcare-related problems worldwide, there is a significant lack of
information and awareness about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection within the community. Insufficient
knowledge regarding its transmission routes, importance of vaccination, and the necessity of screening
programs hinders individuals from benefiting of prevention and treatment options. Therefore, increasing
educational and informational efforts related to HPV is a critical step towards improving public health. In the
present study, it was aimed to determine individuals’ level of knowledge regarding HPV.
Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 554 participants, comprising of
212 men and 342 women aged 18 and older. The data collection tools were the “Participant Identification Form”
and the “HPV Knowledge Scale” and the research was carried out on an online platform via “Google Surveys”.
Results: It was found that 55.4% of the participants were under 28 years of age, while 44.6% were 28 years or
older. Additionally, when evaluating the highest proportions of demographic characteristics,it was determined
that 63.2% of the participants were single and 35.7% were married, with 63.4% being a university graduate.
Upon examining the descriptive statistics of the knowledge test used in the study, the average score was
found to be 9.46±8.53. A statistically significant difference was identified in the HPV knowledge scale scores
based on the participants’ gender, age, marital status, educational background, and occupation (p<0.05). It
was concluded that participants experienced confusion regarding information about HPV, particularly with
deficiencies in their knowledge concerning HPV vaccinations.
Conclusion: The research findings that indicate participants’ confusion regarding HPV and the gap in their
knowledge about HPV vaccinations both highlight the need for educational initiatives tailored to individuals
with varying levels of education.
