The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of HPV from the cervical smears of patients admitted to Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, due to pregnancy, infertility or other gynecologic complaints and from the biopsies of patients with genital papilloma by PCR method and type detection in HPV positive patients.

Ninety-two pregnant women, 59 infertile women, 16 women with genital papillomas, 313 women with other gynecologic complaints and 104 women with no complaints and physical findings as a control group (totally 480 patients) were included in our study. By using MY09 and MY11 primers an in house PCR was performed and HPV positive samples were typed by using by type-specific primers.

Three percent (3/92) of pregnant women, 12 % (7/59) of infertile patients, 25 % (4/16) of biopsy specimens and 11% (34/313) of women with other complaints were found to be positive for HPV. The HPV positivity rates in these groups was significantly higher than that of control groups. Types 16 and 18 were found to be predominant both in pregnant in infertile groups as well as in patients with genital papillomas.
