In this study, staphylococci isolated from various clinical specimens were identified by gase chromatograhy method. While the classical method of identifying staphylococci relies on microscopic examination followed by a variety of biochemical tests, a number of commercial systems have been introduced to simplify the procedure. These systems operate by either phenotypic or genotipic characterization. A commercially available, computer-assisted microbial identification system (MIS) employs gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of bacterial fatty acids. In this study, the MIS was used to identify 54 isolates of Staphylococcus species were tested. Antibiotic susceptibilities of the strains were examined by disk diffusion method. Methicilline resistance were found to be 47.0% and 40.5% in coagulase positive and negative staphylococci, respectively. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus strains were found to be more resistant to other antibiotics than methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus strains. All Staphylococcus strains were susceptible to vancomycine and teicoplanin.
