The aim of the study was to establish the occurrence rate of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women with vaginal discharge with intrauterin device (IUD) and without IUD and the occurrence rate of Gardnerella vaginalis. Forty hundred women with vaginal discharge (200 of them with IUD, 200 of them without IUD) were recruited the study. Diagnosis of BV was established by Amsel's criteria. BV was diagnosed in 62 patients (32%) with IUD, and in 28 patients (14%) without IUD. G.vaginalis isolation rates were found 24 % and 8% respectively. The difference between the two groups was found significantly important. Therefore IUD users should routinely examined for developing vaginitis.
