Keywords: Staphylococci, fusidic acid, antibiotic resistance

The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of 223 Staphylococcus strains, isolated from urine, to fusidic acid. The Staphylococccus strains were classified as follows; 63 oxacillin sensitive Staphlococcus aureus (OSSA), 39 oxacillin resistant S. aureus (ORSA), 74 oxacillin sensitive coagulase negative staphylococci (OSCNS) and 47 oxacillin resistant coagulase negative staphylococci (ORCNS).

Susceptibility of strains to fusidic acid was evaluated according to the criteria determined by French Microbiology-Antibiogram Committee while NCCLS (M2- A6) standarts were used for oxacillin and other antimicrobial agents. The rate of resistance to fusidic acid were 3.2% in OSSA, 7.7% in ORSA, 10.8% in OSCNS and 14.9% in ORCNS. There was no resistance to vancomycin and teicoplanin in none of the strains.
