Keywords: Lichens, antimicrobial activity |
In this study, the antimicrobial activity of acetone and chloroform extracts of lichens, such as Letaria vulpina, Pseudoevernia furfuraceae var. furfuracae and Evernia divericata were tested against different Gram-pozitif cocci and bacilli, Gram-negative bacilli as well as the yeast, Candida albicans. The lichen extractions prepared by both acetone and chloroform showed inhibitory activity against Gram-positive cocci and bacilli. However, no such activity was observed against Gram-negative bacilli and Candida albicans. There is no correlation between different extract concentrations absorbed to discs and increments in zone diameters. The diameter of inhibitory zones were found to be larger when acetone is used instead of chloroform in extraction procedure.
