This study has been issued in order to investigate the prevalence of HBsAg, Anti-HBs and Anti-HCV positivity among patients who applied for different reasons to the outpatient clinic of the department of internal medicine of a university hospital. Besides present and past medical histories, family history, physical examination and routine laboratory examination of 1000 patients who were randomly selected, HBsAg, Anti-HBs and Anti-HCV were also examined. Immunologic examination were performed by mircoeliza method. Among these 1000 patients, the prevalence of HBsAg was 9.6% and the prevalence of Anti-HBs was 24.5%. In this study, it was observed that being a relative of a HBV carrier formed the risk factor for HBV virus infection. Whereas HBsAg carrying, for the health care workers, does not show a different variation from other professions, Anti-HBs positivity was found to be higher than general average Anti-HBs rate (p<0.01). Anti-HCV positivity was determined to be (2.1%) in the population examined. The rate was twice Anti-HCV rate (about 1%) determined in the population of blood donors in our country. It was observed that having gynecological interventions and tooth extractions increased the risk for HCV infection.

As a result, our findings represent a compliance with researches made previously in this country.
