Lyme disease is the fastest spreading tick-borne emerging infection which causes disease in humans and animals. The agents of this disease are spirochetes from the B.burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies complex. Our studies at the North and Northwestern Marmara, Istanbul area and Black Sea region have shown that I.ricinus was the vector tick species and all spirochetes ( B.burgdorferi sensu stricto, B.garinii, B.afzelii, B.valasiana , B.lusitaniae) known to be carried by this tick were found in our country. Genomes of the Turkish strains have been sequenced and they had high similarity values ( 97 %- 100 % ) with the European strains. Case reports and studies are scarce about this disease; its' epidemiology in our country is not well known. In our review, the agent, epidemiology and the situation in our country are presented.
