In this study which aims to investigate the role of motile aeromonads in cases of acute gastroenteritis and their susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents, a total of 115 stool specimens of patients with acute gastroenteritis were examined for motile aeromonads.

In four specimens (3.5%) Aeromonas strains were isolated and all of these four strains were identified as Aeromonas caviae by biochemical identification methods Beta haemolysis was present in all the strains. Among the four species, one of them was resistant to aztreonam, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime and ticarcillin, two of them were resistant to tetracycline and all of them were resistant to ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam and cefazolin. Amikacin, cefoperazone, cefotaxime, cefotetan, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, imipenem, piperacillin, ticarcillin-clavulanate, tobramycin and trimethoprim-sulphametoxazole were detected as antimicrobial agents effective against all strain.
