Keywords: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, induced beta-lactamase, antibiotic resistance

The aim of this study was the determination of induced beta-lactamase activity in 51 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and in vitro antibiotic resistance of these strains which were isolated from various clinical specimens. The distribution of samples was as follows: urine (13), tracheal aspirate (11), bronchoalveolar lavage (8), wound swab (6), throat (6), sputum (5), pleura (1), and dreinage material (1). By using imipenem discs for being strong inducer and aztreonam and cefotaxim discs for being weak inducers, induced beta-lactamase activity in P.aeruginosa isolates were screened with disc induction test. Disc diffusion method was used for determination of antibiotic resistance in clinical isolates according to suggestions of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institude (CLSI). Induced beta-lactamase activity was detected in 27 of 51 (52.9%) P.aeruginosa isolates. The resistance rates of P.aeruginosa isolates were 82.3% for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, 56.9% for cefotaxime, 33.3% for aztreonam, 29.4% for ceftriaxon, 27.5% for gentamicin, 23.5% for ceftazidime, 23.5% for sefepim, 21.6% for piperacillin, 9.8% for ciprofloxacin, 7.8 % for imipenem, and 7.8% for piperacillin/tazobactam. The highest antibiotic susceptibility rate in P. aeruginosa strains were found to piperacillin/tazobactam.
