Hepatitis caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an important health problem because of its tendency to become a chronic infection
and its complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocelluler carcinoma. In some group of patients HBV exists at higher
rates than normal population. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalance of HBV in 84 patients who applied
to the hospital with several rheumotological complaints, according to their anti-nuclear autoantibodies (ANA).
ANA was determined by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and HBsAg and anti-HBc IgG by enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
methods. ANA were positive in 46 (54.7%) of 84 patients. Both HBsAg and anti-HBc IgG were found to be positive in
20.2% (17/84) of the study group which were 17.4% (8/46) ANA positive, and 23.7% (9/38) were ANA negative.
For the patients included in this study, HBsAg and anti-HBc IgG were not different in ANA positive and ANA negative groups,
however their HBsAg and anti-HBc IgG were found higher than normal population. We concluded that this result may
be associated with frequent exposure of these selected patients to invasive procedures for chemotherapy and/or diagnostic
purposes.
