Antibiotic resistance of 287 Gram negative bacteria isolated from urinary tract infection suspected primary care patients were investigated in Sivas Public Health Laboratory within January 2007-March 2008 period. Sensitivity tests were performed using CLSI criteria with disk diffusion method.

E. coli was the most prevalent in the isolated Gram negative strains (60.0%), followed by Klebsiella species (K. pneumoniae 8.2%, K. oxytoca 1.1%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (4.0%) and Proteus species (P. mirabilis 2.0%, P. vulgaris 0.6%). For predominantly isolated E. coli and Klebsiella species the most effective antimicrobial agents were amikacine, aztreonam and cefuroxim. Determining the identification and the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of microorganisms which were the agents of urinary tract infections was especially thought to be helpful and important for the primary care clinicians whom deciding the appropriate empirical treatment of these patients.
