We have studied the prevalance of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL) in 150 fecal samples from 150 persons. Th ose who were not hospitalized within last three months and were not treated by antibiotics were included in this study. Ceft azidime and cefotaxime supplemented medium was used for the selective isolation of potential ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae. Colonies were screened and confirmed by the double-disc synergy test and combined disc test for ESBL production. Antimicrobial susceptibilities of ESBL producing isolates for various antibiotics were determined. ESBL producing bacteria were identified as Escherichia coli (84.4%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (12.5%), Klebsiella oxytoca (3.1%). Th e ESBL producing isolates recovered from our patients corresponded to a CTX-M type (89,4%), TEM type (76.3%) and SHV type (31.5%). Information on the prevalence and types of asymptomatic fecal flora members producing ESBL may be very helpful to improve our understanding about the complex epidemiology of ESBLs.
