Keywords: Helicobacter pylori, virulence factors

Helicobacter pylori is an important risk factor which is known to be associated with the development of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma and mucosa associated lenfoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. H. pylori which inhabits the very hostile environment of the stomach, can colonize and survive in low pH conditions and also has the ability to attach to the human gastric mucosal cells in spite of peristalsis and rapid replenishment of the epithelium. Its high flagellar motility, urease enzyme and chemotactic ability play role in the life strategy of H. pylori in acidic pH. H. pylori transmits its virulence factors into the host cell via type IV secretion system (T4SS) or different pathways and these factors play role in the initiation of the intracellular immune response. In this review article the virulence factors which play role in the survival of H. pylori in low pH, in colonization in gastric mucosa and attachment to gastric epithelium have been discussed.
