Objective: This study was conducted to retrospectively evaluate the results of direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) testing used for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in a 3-year period at Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital, Samsun, Turkey.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of 390 stool samples sent to the parasitology laboratory between January 2008 and November 2010 for the investigation of Cryptosporidium spp. was performed by evaluation of the medical records. Results: One hundred and eighty-three samples (47%) were positive by DFA test. The highest rate of positivity was detected in the 0-10 year- age group. Positive samples mostly belonged to patients admitted to the gastroenterology department. No immunosuppressive condition was detected in 63% of the positive patients. Conclusion: Cryptosporidiosis is most commonly seen in children. Although the parasite causes serious diarrhea in immunocompromised patients, it can also be detected in immunocompetent individuals. Therefore, it is important to use methods with high sensitivity in the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis to prevent the spread of the disease and to guide treatment. |
