Cunninghamella species are the members of Mucoromycotina family. Inhalation of the fungal spores or direct inoculation onto injured skin may cause opportunistic infections. We report a case of colonization of a dirty wound with a mould- compatible Cunninghemalla bertholletiae. A 31-year-old female patient was consulted in the emergency room after bilateral forearm level amputation occurred in a car accident. Following the reconstructive extremity surgery, purulent material was detected at the wound area and a mould was grown in the culture. Direct examination of the material revealed abundant coenocytic hyphae. Phenotypic identification of the isolate was found to be as Cunninghamella bertholletiae. During the follow up the patient was diagnosed to have type II diabetes mellitus. After the clinical examination, Cunninghamella bertholletiae growth was evaluated as colonization and antifungal therapy was not initiated. No growth was detected in the subsequent cultures.
