Acinetobacter baumannii is a gram-negative nonfermentative
bacteria that cause hospital-acquired bacteremia, pneumonia,
meningitis and urinary tract infections, especially in intensive
care units. The pigmented strains of Acinetobacter bacteria
can be found in environmental specimens but are rarely
isolated in clinical specimens as an etiologic agent of
infection. A 66-year-old male patient was admitted to
Urology Department of Dokuz Eylül University Medical
Faculty Hospital, with the initila diagnosis of Fournier
gangrene. We observed that A. baumannii isolated from three
specimens obtained by partial penectomy, urethrectomy and
wound site debridement, produced a brown pigment that
spread on Mueller Hinton agar. Identification was done with
conventional methods and with two different automated
identification systems. The biochemical characteristics of
the brown pigment produced by A. baumannii strain could
not be characterized. We think that the contribution of this
brown pigment to A. baumannii pathogenicity should be
investigated which is rarely found in clinical isolates.
