Keywords: Lactobacillus sp., metabolite, antibiofilm activity

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the antibiofilm activities of metabolites produced by vaginal Lactobacillus sp. against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms.

Method: In this study, 20 Lactobacillus sp. isolates which were previously identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis were used. Antibiofilm activity of the metabolites of the isolates was determined by using microplate-based antibiofilm method on P. aeruginosa. De Man-Rogosa Sharpe Broth was used as negative control.

Results: All tested metabolites showed statistically significant antibiofilm activity on P. aeruginosa biofilms. Although there were differences between the metabolites, the number of biofilm cells decreased at least 4 logarithms (cfu/ml). The best antibiofilm activity was determined for Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus jensenii metabolites that destroyed all P. aeruginosa biofilm cells.

Conclusion: Antibiotics commonly used in the treatment of planktonic forms of pathogenic bacteria are often insufficient for the eradication of bacteria in the biofilm. Good antibiofilm activity demonstrated by vaginal Lactobacillus sp. metabolites suggests that these metabolites can be used as alternative agents to help combat against biofilm-associated infections.
