SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of the viral disease termed as COVID-19 that emerged in China in late 2019, and caused the pandemic. The effects of this alarming disease which affect all the world apparently persist. Therefore, despite many studies are currently ongoing on COVİD-19, in the field of health and medicine, all features of the virus are still not clarified and its many new characteristics are emerging, which indicates the need for conduction of new studies in different fields. The different mutations reported in recent studies have accelerated the spread of the infection and are current examples of these new features. Among these mutations, SARS-CoV-2 VOC-202012/1 mutation detected in the UK, and in different countries, including Turkey, aroused concern worldwide. Still, the E484K mutation seen in England, Brazil, and South Africa is not a new variant in itself, but a mutation that occurs in different variants is of concern as an escape variant. Different diagnostic methods are being used to identify these mutations, to detect infected people, to investigate the effects of the pandemic and to contribute to vaccine studies. Although the standard diagnostic methods accepted among them are molecular-based methods used for detecting the presence of the viral genome, different serological applications, radiological and biochemical tests also support the diagnosis and can be used in the follow-up of the patient.
