Alternative strategies are needed to combat pathogens in many areas such as the dramatic increase in pathogens resistant to existing antibiotics, increasing epidemics, and incurable nosocomial infections. Some studies show that bacteriocins can be an alternative strategy in combating pathogens. Bacteriocins are important peptides of bacterial origin with proven anticancer, antiviral, antibiofilm and antimicrobial effects in the health field. Bacteriocins, which provide pathogen inhibition, are considered as very important molecules because they are harmless to living things and the environment. Although bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria are the focus of studies in health, successful findings are obtained as a result of studies with bacteriocins of other producing bacteria such as Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and studies with bacteriocins are rapidly continuing. It is predicted that bacteriocins may play a key role in the development of new strategies in the fight against pathogens. This review includes studies that reveal the possibilities of using bacteriocins in health, and as a result, the importance of bacteriocins is emphasized.
