Keywords: Enterococcus, high level aminoglycoside resistance, Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE)

Fifty Enterococcus strains isolated from different clinical samples sent to Haseki Training and Research Hospital's Clinical Microbiology Laboratory between March 2004 and April 2005 were identified by conventional methods and identified with Mini API ( Bio Mereux, France) at species level.

Twentyfive of 50 Enteroccus strains were identified as E. faecalis, 16 as E. faecium, three as E. durans, two as E. gallinorum, two as E. casseliflavus, one as E. hirae and one as E. avium .

The susceptibilities of the strains to penicillin, rifampicin, ciprofloxacin, imipenem, teicoplanin, vancomycin and high level gentamicin and streptomycin were studied by disk diffusion method and vancomycin MIC values were determined by E-test method. The resistance rates of all strains were found as 34% for penicilin, 50% for rifampicin, 34% for gentamicin, 16% for streptomycin, 34% for ciprofloxacin and 38% for imipenem. The MIC values for vancomycin were between 1-8 mcg/ml.

Although there is an increasing ratio of vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE) all over the world, the results are low in our hospital, since to the protocols taken in our hospital, such as control of antibiotic prescriptions by infectious diseases specialists and limited antibiogram results given by our clincal microbiology laboratory.
