Keywords: Syphilis, seroprevalence, electrochemiluminescence

Objective: The increase in the number of syphilis seropositive cases was striking in this period when the effect of Covid decreased and the number of hospital admissions and tests increased. This raises the question whether this increase is a real increase due to the increase in syphilis seroprevalence.

Methods: The results of syphilis screening obtained by electrochemiluminescence and RPR method between January 2021 and September 2022 were examined. The number of samples, and positive samples per month were determined. Then, the daily averages of the total and positive sample numbers per month were calculated. Monthly positive sample rates were compared with the chi-square test. The median values of the RPR test results from the positive samples were compared.

Results: An average of 539 samples per day and a total of 233779 samples were studied. The average monthly positive sample rate was 1.82%, but an increase was observed from 1.5% in the initial period to 2.5% in the last period. The RPR results had a non-normal right- skewed distribution. The median value of the RPR titration results in all months except two months was found to be 1/2. Towards the end of the observation period, the number of samples with negative and 1/1 titration results increased.

Conclusion: The seroprevalence of syphilis within the period we examined is similar to the 2% rate previously detected in the same region. However, an increase has been observed in the last 3 months compared to previous periods, indicating the need to follow up the results in the following months.
