Human malaria is a very important infectious disease that has deeply affected human history and still causes
health problems and mortality worldwide. Pregnant women are at high risk of developing severe malaria, and
therefore serious complications. In our study, a 22-year old, 6 months pregnant woman from the Democratic
Republic of Congo who was diagnosed with malaria is presented. It was determined that our patient, who had
symptoms of high fever, headache, loss of appetite, and diarrhea, had a fever attack for the second time. Upon
detection of young trophozoite (ring) forms of Plasmodium parasites in blood smears, malaria rapid antigen test
was performed and it was found to be positive for Plasmodium falciparum. Our patient, who came to Northern
Cyprus from her country fourteen days ago, was treated with artemether/lumefantrine and development of
serious complications was prevented with the right treatment. In the selection of treatment, the criteria in the
‘Malaria Treatment Guide’ of CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) were taken into consideration.
This case demonstrates the importance of recognizing and treating malaria even in regions where malaria was
eradicated.
