Keywords: Rabies, rabies vaccines, family practice

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and behaviors of individuals admitted to Outpatient Department of Rabies Risky Contact on the rabies and its vaccine.

Methods: This study was conducted with individuals who applied to Family Medicine Clinic between 15th September and 31st December 2019. A questionnaire form was prepared with Likert-type questionnaire including the sociodemographic data and the level of knowledge about rabies and its vaccine, and then administered to the participants face-to-face.

Results: In our study, 165 (55.6%) of 297 participants were male. A total of 253 contacted animals with no owners (85.2%). After contact, 161 (54.2%) participants washed their wounds with soapy water, while 95 (32%) of them did not take any action. In addition, 62.9% of the women were injured by the cat and 53.9% of the men were injured by the dog. It was determined that women gave more correct answers to the expressions such as ‘Animals get vaccinated like humans’, and ‘The rabies vaccine is administered through the arm.’ (respectively; p=0.03, p=0.034). It was found that the sum of the knowledge-measurement question scores of the patients who kept pets, who had a suspected rabies contact before, who did first aid correctly and who applied to outpatient departments themselves were significantly higher than other patients (respectively; p=0.004, p=0.025, p=0.004, p=0.022).

Conclusion: It was determined that the patients did not have sufficient knowledge about rabies and its vaccine. By using social channels and providing education at schools in childhood, the knowledge level of people on this subject and the rate of correct intervention after injury can be increased.
