In this study, 919 ear-drainage specimens of patients admitted to Microbiology Department, Yakutiye Resarch Hospital, Atatürk University between January 1998-January 1999 were evaluated in terms of microbiological view. No growth was observed in 52 specimens, and normal flora and pathogenic microorganisms were detected in 370 and 497 specimens, respectively. It was found that 178 of pathogenic microorganisms were Staphylococcus aureus and the remaining ones were gram-negative bacteria. At the end of antibiotic susceptibility test done for S.aureus with disk diffusion method, it was found that while vancomycin (100%), teicoplanin (95%) and cefaclor (94%) were the most effective agents, erythromycin (36%), penicillin (28%) and ampicillin (25%) were the least effective ones.
