Keywords: Blood Cultures, microorganisms, antibotic resistant

Between 1997 and 2000, 5231 blood cultures from 3200 patients were evaluated by the Bactec 9120 automotic blood culture system (Becton Dickinson) In our laboratory. 1372 of them were culture positive, 21 of them were false positive, 33 of them were contaminants and none of them were false negative. 722 (55%) of the positive cultures included Gram positive bacteria. (407 plazma coagulase negatif staphylococci, 192 Staphylococcus aureus, 72 Streptococcus spp, 27 Enterococcus spp, 2 Corynebacterium jeikeium, 1 Corynebacterium aquaticum, 1 Corynebacterium genitalium,1 Listeria spp. ve 18 Gram positive bacilli), 539 (41%) of the positive cultures included Gram negative bacteria (112 Pseudomonas spp., 105 Acinetobacter spp., 83 Enterobacter spp., 73 Esherichia coli, 54 Klebsiella pneumonia, 38 Brucella spp., 24 Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, 20 coliform bacteria, 12 Salmonella spp., 8 Citrobacter spp., 3 Proteus spp., 1 Morganella spp., 1 Serratia biogrup 1, 1 Actinobacillus suis, 1 Hafnia alvei, 1 Pasteurella haemolitica, 1 Haemophilus influenzae tip b and 1 Agrobacterium radiobacter) 14 (%1) of the positive cultures were anaerob bacteria (4 Propionibacterum acnes, 4 Clostridium spp., 2 Actinomyces spp, 2 Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, 1 Bacteroides fragilis, 1 Prevotella rumnicola), 40 (3%) of the positive cultures included fungi (17 Candida albicans, 21 Candida spp., 1 Torulopsis spp. and 1 Acromonium spp.) and 3 (0.2%) %) of the positive cultures included Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Antimicrobial resistance patterns of these microorganisms included tested by using disk diffusion method with regard to the recommendation of the NCCLS. According to the results of this tests; vancomicin, teicoplanin and fusidic acid for Staphylococcus strains, cefepim, amicacin and ciprofloxacin for Pseudomonas spp., imipenem, meropenem and netilmicin for Acinetobacter spp., cefepim, imipenem and meropenem for Enterobacter-Klebsiella strains, imipenem, meropenem amicacin, cefepim for E.coli. were found to be the most effective antimicrobial agents,
