Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal infections are the most prevalently seen infections and they may spread to the other organs or cause complications unless they are treated. The purpose of this study is to determine the bacteria which cause infection or colonize on the oropharyngeal region in persons admitted to the Kesme village health center.

Hundred and forty-two throat specimens were taken from 111 adult and 31 children who admitted to Kesme village Health Center in Sütçüler administrative district for routine visit in November 2000.

Twelve Group A Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (ABHS) were isolated. Of which 10 were from adults (%9.01) and two were from children (%6.45).Nine intense Staphylococcus aureus (%6.34) and six intense Gramnegative bacilli (%4.23) colonization were detected. No Arcanobacterium haemolyticum were detected in the cultures.

In regard to the fact that the people were admitted to the health center for routine check-up visit, the prevalance of ABHS were evaluated as high enough to be wothed to take note, so it is advised to make a diagnosis not only with the clinical signs and symptoms, but also throat culture must be taken. It is advised to report intense S. aureus and Gram-negative bacilli colonization because these bacteria can cause infection in lower respiratory tract or may lead to sepsis especially in inpatients.
