In this study, P fimbriae, mannose resistant hemagglutination (MRHA), type 1 fimbriae, hemolysin, serum resistence of and multiple antibiotic resistance were investigated for Escherichia coli strains (n=140) isolated from the urine of children with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). (n=43), cystitis (n=36), and pyelonephritis (n=21) and from the fecal flora of healthy children (n=40).

Investigated virulence factors observed in pyelonephritis, cystitis, asymptomatic bacteriuria and control group are 81%, 53%, 37% and 10% for P fimbriae; 81%, 58%, 47% and 10% for MRHA; 29%, 50%, 42% and 28% for type 1 fimbriae; 33%, 31%, 28% and 0% for hemolysin; 62%, 47%, 63%, and 43% for serum resistance; 43%, 31% 44% and 5%, for multiple resistance, respectively.

Our results suggest that especially P fimbriae, and hemolysin, MRHA, multiple resistance are common virulance factors of E. coli isolated from ürine of children with urinary tract infections.P fimbriae phenotype is seen with hemolysin or multiple resistance phenotypes.
