Tuberculosis is an infection disease that is old as the mankind, and still remains as an important global health problem. Tuberculosis is in the second place among the cause of all deaths and in the first place among cause of death from infectious diseases in the world, today. Resistant cases are reported after the introduction of streptomycin to the treatment in 1944. Nowadays, tuberculosis cases are increased parallel to the HIV cases. This observation followed by rifampin resistant and INH resistant cases. So that, it is important to determine the ratio of drug-resistant strains isolated from our area.

The aim of this study was to determine resistant strains of tuberculosis in MGIT system in Isparta.

Mycobacterium strains were isolated from 110 out of 1439 cases suspected as tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis strains were identified at the 108 of the cases. Eighty four of all tuberculosis cases have not been treated before. Eight strains isolated from these patients were resistant to one of the major drugs while 2 strains were resistant to more than one drug (primary resistance). Twenty four cases with tuberculosis that have been treated previously, 5 strains isolated from these patients were resistant to one of the major drugs and the other 3 strains were resistant to more than one drug (secondary resistance). Eighteen strains isolated from 108 cases were found to be resistant to one more of the antituberculosis drugs.

The ratio of resistant strains isolated from tuberculosis cases observed in our area was low, despite the high ratio in many developed countries.
