Staphylococcus aureus Carriage in Surgery Clinic and Operating Room Staff in a Training Hospital

In case of two staphylococcal wound infection per week recognized during last two weeks in İzmir chest Diseases and Surgery Training Hospital, 62 medical and paramedical staff working at the two surgery wards operating rooms and postoperative intensive care unit were investigated for staphylococcal carriage. Staphylococcal density of the air of the operating and preparing rooms were determined by sedimentation method. Bacterial density was found in maximal appropriateness limits. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 18 staff. Both hand and nasal carriage were found from six persons. In six staff only hand, in six staff only nasal carriage were recognized. Four MRSA carriers were found. MRSA strains were isolated from hands of carriers. No glycopeptides resistance was found in isolates.
