One hundred clinical isolates of Escherichia coli were investigated for haemolysin production, haemolysin types and their relationship with resistance to ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam, gentamicin, trimethoprim-sulphometoxazole, tetracycline, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. 24 strains produce at least one type of haemolysin. The percentages of resistance to norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin, but not to other agents, among non-haemolytic isolates were significantly higher (p<0.05) than among haemolytic isolates.
