In this study the results of the blood cultures obtained on CHROMagar Candida used us for the determation of yeast isolates and for the differentiation of mix yeast infections were reported and discussed. Fungal strains isolated in 60 patients' blood cultures in Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of Marmara University Hospital within a period of May 1999 and November 2000 were included in the study. All specimens were inoculated in parallel onto CHROMagar Candida and Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA) and incubated at 37 °C for 48 hours. The colonies on the CHROMagar Candida were identified on the basis of morphology and pigmentation and yeast isolates from both CHROMagar Candida and SDA were identified to the species level by standard mycological methods. Candida albicans the most common species (%40), followed by C.parapsilosis. Three blood specimens were found to contain yeast a mixture; two of them contained C.albicans and C.parapsilosis, the other formed with C.parapsilosis and Trichosporon asahii. The sensitivity of CHROMagar for C.albicans, C.parapsilosis, C.tropicalis and C.krusei was found to be 100%. As a result, the CHROMagar Candida was an extremely successful differential detector of mixed yeast population at candidemia cases and it also allowed diagnosis of Candida species more rapidly than classical methods.
