Telithromycin is a new ketolide antimicrobial, specifically developed for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory tract infections. In this study, we aimed to report the susceptibility rates of staphylococci isolated from various clinical specimens to telithromycin. Hundred and thirty-nine Staphylococcus strains [61 S.aureus and 78 coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS)] isolated from various clinical specimens were included in the study. Nineteen of S. aureus and 29 of CNS were methicillin resistant. Telithromycin resistance was tested by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Telithromycin resistance were detected in 32 of 139 (23 %) staphylococci strains, 8 (13) of which were S.aureus and 24 (31 %) were CNS. When considered for meticillin resistance, 4 of 19 MRSA (21 %) and 12 of 29 (41 %) CNS strains were found to be telithromycin resistant. Telithromycin resistance was found to be higher in CNS than in S.aureus (p<0.05) and higher in meticillin resistant strains than in susceptible ones althought the difference was insignificant (p>0.05) Activity of telithromycin was detected to be similar to that of clindamycin (p>0.05) and better than erithromycin (p=0.000). In conclusion, it would be convenient to use this antibiotic, produced for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory tract infections, according to the antibiogram results.
