Keywords: Gram negative bacteria, quinolones resistance |
Susceptibility of the 116 Gram negative bacteria (22 Acinetobacter baumannii, 30 Pseudomonas aeruginosa , 34 Escherichia
coli and 30 Klebsiella pneumoniae) against quinolones (ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, moxifloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin,
norfloxacin, travofloxacin and nalidixic acid) were evaluated using disk diffusion method in accordance with the CLSI
recommendation. The presence of extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) was investigated using double disk synergy
method. ESBL rates was 20 % for E.coli and 13 % for K.pneumoniae. No significant difference was observed between the
newer and older quinolone resistances of strains. But resistance rates in K.pneumoniae strains were lower in comparison to
others. The K.pneumoniae strains are generally isolated in the pediatric wards and quinolones are the antibiotics which are
mainly used for very special occasions in this clinic.
Preventing improper antibiotic use, and enforcing rational antibiotic policies would yield much better results related to
resistance rates.
