Keywords: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, antimicrobial resistance, metallo-beta-lactamases |
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and metallo-beta-lactamase
production rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from patients hospitalized at intensive care unit of
Çanakkale State Hospital between January 2008-January 2009.
Materials and Methods: The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 108 P. aeruginosa strains were evaluated prospectively
according to CLSI M100-S18 guidelines and metallo-beta-lactamase production was investigated by double-disk
synergy method .
Results: Imipenem resistance was found in 20 (18.5%) of the strains and 14 (70%) of imipenem resistant strains
were phenotypically metallo-beta-lactamase positive.
Conclusion: These results indicated high rate of phenotypic metallo-beta-lactamase positivity in carbapenem
resistant P. aeruginosa strains isolated in the ICU. However, this phenotypic metallo-beta-lactamase production
should further be investigated to enlighten the genetic basis of carbapenem resistance in these nosocomial
P.aeruginosa isolates.
