Objective: Molecular methods are widely used for routine microbiological diagnosis in recent years. Some of these molecular tests are listed in the Medical Enforcement Declaration proposed by Social Security Institution. In the present study technical details and the cost analysis of “Candida PCR” assay which we have developed was presented.

Materials and Methods: The method we have developed was based on real time polymerase chain reaction to demonstrate DNA of Candida albicans in blood and other clinical samples. Clinical samples (n=161) and 40 spiked positive controls were used in the study. Price quotations for the chemicals necessary for real-time PCR assay were obtained from three different commercial companies and a comparative cost analysis was done accordingly.

Results: On the basis of the costs mentioned in Medical Enforcement Declaration, net profit calculated ranged between 14.80 TL and 59.52 TL per test.

Conclusion: It was concluded that “Candida PCR”, a valuable test for the diagnosis of candidemia, was of low cost and might increase the income of routine microbiology laboratory.
