Keywords: Dermatophytosis, tinea capitis, Microsporum audouinii

Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) is an inflammatory disease of childhood which is rarely seen after puberty. Herein, a nine- year- old patient with an initial diagnosis of tinea capitis who had temporal alopecia caused by Microsporum audouinii isolates has been presented. Hair and skin scrapings with hair samples are taken from areas with lesions, and -examined directly under microscope, and their cultures were obtained. On samples treated with potsium hidroxide calcoflour white, ectothrix localization of fungal elements was seen. Beginning from the 8th day on whitish, salmon -pink colored mould colonies with a radiating distribution pattern grew at Sabouraud dextrose agar enriched with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. Microscopic examination revealed hyphae with septa, sometimes intercalary, commonly terminal chlamydoconidia with sharply pointed tips, rarely microconidiums, nodular, racquet and comb like hyphae were determined. Thereby produced mould colonies were considered to be Microsporum audouinii. Isolated mould was defined as M. audouinii because of its typically peach colour pigmentation, poor growth on rice grain medium and non-perforating characteristics. This case is presented to renew knowledge about this currently seldom detected fungal agent.
