Ticks, the members of the superfamily Ixodoidea in the class
Arachnida are terrestrial organisms that feed with the blood
of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Infectious
organisms being taken by ticks during feeding with host
blood pass into the salivary glands, the ovaries, the eggs and
the larvae of them. All of the tick-borne viral disease agents
are examined within arboviruses. Heartland virus, one of
these viruses, is transmitted by Amblyomma americanum
ticks and can cause multiple organ failure and death. The
major vector of Severe fever with thrombocytopenia
syndrome virus is Haemaphysalis longicornis. Tick-borne
encephalitis virus, Powassan virus and Louping ill
virus which cause neurological diseases are transmitted to
humans by Ixodes spp. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
virus which is widespread all over the world is transmitted
by Hyalomma spp. Omsk virus affecting the nervous system
and Colorado tick fever virus affecting hematopoietic
cells are carried by Dermacentor spp. All of these viruses are
high-level biosecurity agents that constitute individual and
social risk. For this reason, it is necessary to be careful while
working with clinical specimens. In this review paper, the
existing information about the tick-borne viral pathogens
mentioned above are presented in the light of current
literature.
