Keywords: Carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, colistin, antimicrobial susceptibility |
Objective: The limitations of treatment options in carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae
infections have been related to high morbidity and mortality in recent years. The wide usage of
colistin as the last-line treatment for those infections has led to the development of an increasing
resistance to colistin.
Method: In the present study, a total of 81 carbapenem- resistant K. pneumoniae, which were isolated from various clinical specimens in Central Laboratory of Hacettepe Universiy Medical Faculty between September 2018-December 2018, were tested against colistin by using broth microdilution method according to the EUCAST standards. Results: Colistin resistance was determined in 39.5% (n=32) of the isolates tested. According to the sample site, 35% of the urine isolates and 56% of the blood isolates were resistant to colistin. Isolates all of the total 3 cerebrospinal fluid samples included in the analysis were also resistant to colistin. Conclusion: The high prevalence of colistin resistance may cause limitations in treatment options in multiple- drug resistant K. pneumoniae infections. |
