Keywords: Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, HIV

Objective: Viral hepatitis and HIV are important public health problems. This study was aimed to determine the seropositivity of HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV, and anti-HIV and investigate the distribution according to age groups and genders in Kars province.

Methods: HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV and anti-HIV test results of patients who applied to our hospital for various reasons between January 2020 and December 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. Patient samples were studied by the chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay method in ELISA device.

Results: In our study, HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV and anti-HIV seropositivity rates were 1.6% (355/22.635), 26.8% (5.455/20.381), 0.1% (33/22.176), and 0.03% (6/21.801), respectively. Anti-HBs positivity was found in 5.6% (20/355) of HBsAg positive patients and 45.4% (15/33) of anti-HCV positive patients; HBsAg positivity was detected in 16.7% (1/6) of HIV-positive patients. It was observed that 60.8%, 60.6% and 100% of the HBsAg, anti-HCV and anti-HIV positive patients were male, respectively, and 51.6% of the anti-HBs positive patients were female. A statistically significant difference was found between the genders of the patients who were found to be positive for HBsAg, anti-HBS and anti-HIV (p=<0.001, p=<0.001 and p=0.022, respectively). HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV and anti-HIV positivity were highest in 51-64 (34.4%), 19-30 (44.3%), 19-30 (36.3%) and 31-50 ( 50%) age groups, respectively, and the lowest seropositivity rates were among the group under 18 years. There was a statistically significant difference between the age groups and years of HBsAg and anti-HBS positive patients (p=<0.001).

Conclusion: The determination of viral hepatitis and HIV seropositivity in our country will contribute to the development of prevention and control strategies as well as diagnosis and treatment.
