In our study 292 enterococcal strains isolated from clinical samples and stool/rectal swab samples of outpatients/inpatients between January 2001-February 2002 were identified with API 20 Strep. High level resistance to aminoglycosides was determined by agar screening method. Penicillin and glycopeptid susceptibility testing of enterococci were performed by means of disc diffusion method and E-test, respectively. E.faecalis (85.2%) was the predominant species. Resistance rates to penicillin in clinical and stool samples were 68.4% and 56.3%, respectively. None of the strains showed resistance to vancomycin or teicoplanin. 12.6 % of the strains isolated from fecal samples were found to be sensitive to vancomycin. High level resistance to streptomycin and gentamicin in the clinical samples and stool/rectal strains were 41% (39/95), 51.5% (49/95) and 13% (26/197), 25.3% (50/197), respectively. High level resistance to streptomycin and gentamicin were determined in E.faecium strains and E.faecalis strains as 38% and 10%, respectively and in all the strains this resistance rate was 14%. All of the strains of E. faecium when compared with E.faecalis showed much higher resistance rates to all the antibiotics. Although no glycopeptide resistance was determined in our study, high level resistance to aminoglycoside and penicillin emphasize the necessity to follow the susceptibility profile of the bacteria.
