The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of Staphylococcus strains isolated from clinical specimens to a new streptogramin compound quinupristin/dalfopristin. A total of 200 Staphylococcus aureus strains, 100 were methicillin resistant (MRSA) and 100 methicillin susceptible (MRSA), isolated at Düzce Medical School Research Hospital Microbiology Laboratory were examined.

Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method according to CLSI recommendations. No resistant strain observed among methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains while one methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain isolated from conjunctival sample in 2003 had resistance to quinupristin/dalfopristin. All strains were found to be susceptible to vancomycin.

In conclusion, quinupristin/dalfopristin can be a reasonable alternative for Staphylococcus infections in order to prevent the development of glycopeptide resistance that has been increased in recent years. However, although this drug is not on market in Turkiye, we observed a resistant strain in this study suggesting there is a need for strict regulations in selecting antibiotics.
