Bacillus genera are common in nature, and they do not cause disease on animals and humans except for some species such as B. anthracis, B. subtilis and B. cereus. In this study, a total of 41 Bacillus bacteria isolated from 287 drinking water samples obtained from Rize city and its counties during the years 2001 to 2002 were identified in species level and investigated their susceptibility to antibiotics. Identification of the strains was performed by traditional microbiological methods. The strains were identified as 36.58% of Bacillus cereus, 29.26% of Bacillus circulans, 14.63% of Bacillus mycoides and 4.87% of Bacillus sphaericus, but six isolates not identified. Resistance profiles of the strains to penicillin, ampicillin, bacitracin, erythromycin, amikacin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, novabiocin and vancomycin were determined by agar disk diffusion method. While the strains were found to be resistant 100% to bacitracin, 75% to ampicillin, 70.3% to penicillin and 31.7% to novabiocin, no resistant strains were detected to amikacin and vancomycin.
