Keywords: Daptomycin, enterococcus, linezolid |
Objective: Enterococcal infections are among the leading
causes of health care-associated infections, and in the
treatment of these infections gradually increasing rate of
antimicrobial resistance issue is encountered all over
theworld. Resistance to glycopeptides and high-level
aminoglycosides also increases the use of antibiotics such
as linezolid and daptomycin against resistant gram-positive
bacteria. Detection of in vitro efficacies of daptomycin and
linezolid against Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus
faecalis strains isolated from blood cultures was aimed in
this study.
Material and Methods: Sevety-nine Enterococcus spp.
isolated from blood cultures between May 2015-August
2016 were included in the study. Conventional methods and
Phoenix automated system (Becton Dickinson, USA) were
used in the identification of isolates. Broth microdilution
was used to test for daptomycin susceptibility whereas
gradient test was used to test linezolid susceptibility.
Results were evaluated according to CLSI 2016 for
daptomycin and EUCAST 2016 for linezolid.
Results: Twenty-four (30.4%) of the enterococci isolated from
blood cultures were identified as E. faecium, and 55 (69.6%)
as E. faecalis. All isolates were detected as susceptible to
daptomycin and linezolid. Daptomycin MIC values were
detected as 0.006-1 μg/ml for E. faecalis and 0.125-2 μg/ml
for E. faecium. Linezolid MIC values were detected as 0.25-2
μg/ml for E. faecalis and 0.125-2 μg/ml for E. faecium.
Conclusion: Daptomycin and linezolid, as detected in vitro
effective against Enterococci strains, are thought to be
good alternatives in the treatment of resistant enterococcal
infections. Although daptomycin and linezolid resistant
strains were not detected in our study, microbiology
laboratories should be careful about the possibility of
development of resistance against these antibiotics.
